Vol. 135 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Meath Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the Land Commission have acquired for division the Langford and Plunkett estates at Summerhill, County Meath, and if, in view of the many eligible uneconomic holders and cottage tenants who surround these estates, he will have steps taken to see that the local needs are first satisfied before outsiders are brought in.

The estates in question have not yet been acquired by the Land Commission. The claims of local smallholders and cottage tenants will be fully considered before the lands are allotted.

asked the Minister for Lands if it has been decided to acquire for forestry purposes the bogland and wooded portions of the Langford estate at Summerhill, County Meath, and if, in view of the fact that a traditional nursery business has been carried on in this area for many generations, he will have steps taken to develop and enlarge this industry, so as to absorb the many unemployed men in this area.

It is probable that portion of the Langford estate, at present in course of acquisition, will be allotted for afforestation purposes. If and when a forestry centre is established in this area the question of operating a nursery can be considered.
