NOTES:
(1) It is not possible to give a precise definition of a "unit" of machinery since a "unit" may comprise any number of machines from one to six or seven depending on the type of work being undertaken. Details of the main items of machinery working in each county have accordingly been set out above.
(2) Many of the contractors are carrying out the work by hand labour.
(3) Return sets out only the numbers of contractors at present working. A number of other contractors who engage on land project work were not working at date of preparation of return.
