Vol. 135 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Batch Bread Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the price of batch bread per 2 lb. loaf in Cork City, Dublin City and the towns of Cobh, Midleton, Youghal, Fermoy and Mitchelstown.

The maximum retail prices for batch bread in any part of the country are those set out in the Bread (Prices) Order, 1952 (Amendment) Order, 1952. The controlled maximum price of the one-piece 2 lb. batch loaf is 9¼d. but I understand that sales of batch loaves in the districts named are not very considerable owing to a local preference for turnover bread.

Is the Minister aware there is no such thing as batch bread at all at the moment? All the loaves are fancy loaves. For three and a half years we controlled that but Deputy Corry has not been so anxious to control it in the year and a half that he has been on that side of the House.

The price of turnover bread is also controlled.
