Vol. 135 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Unemployment Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the gross inadequacy of the rate of pay on schemes carried out by the Special Employment Schemes Office; and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to bring the rate into line with remuneration obtainable in similar employment.

I would refer to my reply to a similar question from the Deputy on 3rd July, 1952.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary not aware that in County Cork the wages paid on these schemes are £3 6s. a week, while the county council rate for similar work is £4?

I am not so aware. I think the wages paid in County Cork and in every county are the county council rate of wages for the county.

If I supply the Parliamentary Secretary with information as to this, will he look into the matter?

I will be very glad to do so.
