Vol. 136 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage to Donegal Fishermen's Gear.

Mr. Brennan

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of damage done to the fishing gear of inshore fishermen recently in Malinbeg, and the likelihood of damage to inshore fishing grounds, he will request An Bord Iascaigh Mhara to issue instructions tothe skippers of the new trawlers operating from Killybegs to keep off the inshore fishing grounds.

The incident referred to by the Deputy took place and is regretted. The skipper in charge of the vessel involved was acting in disregard of specific instructions issued by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara in fishing in the waters mentioned. The board are taking the necessary steps to ensure that the operations of the three high sea vessels recently acquired by them will not give further cause for similar complaint by the inshore fishermen and they are accepting responsibility for the damage to fishing gear recently caused in the Malinbeg area.

Mr. Brennan

That is satisfactory.
