Vol. 136 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that since the decontrol of fish prices many types of fish have shown unwarranted increases in price, having regard to the price paid to the primary producer; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

I not am aware that the position is as stated by the Deputy. The catch is sold by public auction and the primary producer receives the amount realised less the auctioneer's commission.

There is no evidence that undue profit margins are being taken by theretail trade. A survey of retail prices made a fortnight ago showed that retail prices generally have followed the trend of the published wholesale prices.
