Vol. 136 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gaeltacht School Meals Scheme.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware of the existing anomalies in respect of the administration of the school meals scheme in the Gaeltacht and congested districts; and, if so, whether he will introduce proposals for legislation to remedy them at an early date.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the fact that certain districts in the Counties of Kerry and Donegal, which are regarded locally as Gaeltacht areas, are not scheduled in the School Meals (Gaeltacht) Act of 1930 and are not, therefore, districts to which that Act applies.

I am not prepared, at present, to introduce legislation to deal with this matter but, when a suitable opportunity arises, consideration will be given to an extension of the scope of the Act to include such areas.
