Vol. 136 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industry for County Donegal.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will consider the establishment of some industry in the factory at Annagry, County Donegal, as soon as possible.

This question is constantly under review but so far it has not been possible to locate a suitable industry for establishment at Annagry.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that he and his predecessors have given similar replies within the past two years? In view of the fact that this factory, a substantial building, is in the centre of the Gaeltacht, a serious effort should be made to find a suitable industry which will give employment to these Irish speakers in the Gaeltacht.

Mr. Lynch

I am aware that the answer given formerly was in similar terms but, as the Deputy is aware, the hope was that an extension of the present toy industry at Crolly, or possibly of the flat knitting industry, would be located there. As far as the toy industry is concerned, 1951 and 1952 were not good trading years. As the Deputy is aware, a new finishing centre has been established at Tourmakeady whereby it is hoped to expand the knitting industry. It is too early yet to indicate whether that can be done. If it is possible, I am sure consideration will be given to Annagry.

As the most prosperous industry seems to be dancing, would the Parliamentary Secretary consider turning it into a dance-hall?
