Vol. 136 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - House Purchase Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has given consideration to the question of authorising county councils to provide purchase schemes for houses at present let on the basis of differential rents, and whether he will make a statement on the matter.

The preparation and submission of proposals for the sale of labourers' cottages let on the graded or differential renting system is a matter for the local authorities. Any such proposals will be considered by me and those local authorities who have inquired from my Department in the matter have been informed accordingly.

Has the Minister got any suggestions as to how such a scheme should be framed?

The suggestions should come from the local bodies. The local bodies should prepare the schemes because in my capacity as Minister I have to adjudicate as between local bodies and individual tenants. I cannot, therefore, make any suggestions in advance.

Even on the principles to be followed?

Not on anything.

The latter answer is quite true.
