Vol. 136 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Slaney Fishing Season.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider opening the fishing season for the net men on the River Slaney from Ferrycarrig to Enniscorthy from 1st March, as it would be a great advantage to net fishermen to open one month earlier in the coming season.

It is not possible to make an alteration in the fishing season in any locality without holding a public inquiry. As a prerequisite to such an inquiry, a statement by the interested parties showing prima faciethat the change sought would be in the interests of the fisheries of the river as a whole must be submitted to me. No such statement has so far been furnished in regard to net fishing on the River Slaney.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that, at a meeting of the Wexford Fishery Board in Enniscorthy, as reported in the Wexford Peopleof January 17th, the fishermen on the Slaney asked for an earlier opening? The chairman was in favour of it and also another member or two. The people objecting to it, however, are the type of people to whom we had references yesterday in connection with the purchase of Tulyar—such people as Colonel this, Major that and Captain the other, all foreigners who are depriving the Slaney fishermen of the advantage of the earlier opening. This earlier opening was promised in 1932 by the present Minister for Health, Dr. Ryan, when he said that, if he were elected, he would grant this concession.

The Deputy is making a speech.

I am not making a speech, but I am reminding the Minister of the promise he gave to the fishermen on the Slaney.

Tell the truth some time.

I am telling the truth.
