Vol. 138 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fermoy Flour Mills.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether (a) he is aware that the Cork Milling Company has announced the intention of closing down the Clondulane Flour Mills, Fermoy, from the 14th May; (b) he has had discussions with representatives of the company in the matter; (c) any reasons have been given for the closing down; and (d), in view of the fact that the livelihood of 30 families is involved, he will state what he proposes to do in the matter.

In regard to (a), (b) and (c) of the questions, the answers are in the affirmative.

I have asked the company to reconsider its decision to cease milling wheat at this mill.

I have also pointed out that under the provisions of the Agricultural Produce (Cereals) Act, 1933, I am empowered to revoke a milling licence if the business of milling wheat ceases tobe carried on at any mill, and have made it clear that if such circumstances should arise in relation to the mill at Clondulane I would proceed to revoke the milling licence and to grant a licence in its stead to a suitable applicant for the operation of a flour mill in the same locality.
