Vol. 139 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transatlantic Air Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the decision of the Civil Aeronautics Board, it is intended to proceed with the hireage of American planes for the purpose of providing a transatlantic air service, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The position has not changed since I answered a similar question on 22nd April. The plans for the operation of a transatlantic air service in 1953 having been abandoned, the possibility of commencing such a service in 1954 with hired aircraft is still being considered.

Am I to understand from what the Minister says that the decision of the American Civil Aeronautics Board applies so far only to the application made for the 1953 service?

It was decided, in view of the character of that decision and the delay in formulating it, not to proceed in 1953. Whether, in view of its character, we will proceed in 1954 is a matter that is being considered.

The decision that the operation of the liners will not extendbeyond two years—do I understand that is the aspect now being examined?

That is the important aspect of the decision.

Can the Minister say how much of the £460,000 has been spent?

So far as I know, Aer Rianta has incurred some expense in connection with legal advice and perhaps travelling expenses, but no money has been invested in the development of this service.
