Vol. 141 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - New County Mayo Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the existing national school at Sheanmore (Roll No. 17377) is now in a very advanced state of deterioration; and, if so, if he is in a position to state when the workof the erection of a new school may be started.

I am aware that the existing school at Sheanmore is in an advanced state of deterioration. The manager has represented that he finds it difficult to procure a suitable and convenient site and accordingly the Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to say whether, in the special circumstances, they would be prepared to recommend the acceptance of the existing site for the erection of the proposed new school. No progress can be made in the case until the question of the site has been satisfactorily settled.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the overcrowding of the present school at Doohoma, and as the site for the proposed new school was inspected and approved of some time ago, he will take immediate steps to have the new school erected.

A grant towards the cost of erecting the proposed new school cannot be sanctioned until satisfactory evidence of title to the site has been furnished and until certain other preliminary arrangements have been completed. The Department is in correspondence with the manager in these matters and every effort will be made to expedite the case.

asked the Minister for Education if he is in a position to state when the proposed new school will be erected at Trunbeg, Newport, as the existing school is generally defective.

Two sites which were offered for the proposed new school at Trunbeg were found to be unsuitable. As the manager's efforts to obtain a suitable site have not proved successful, the Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to resurvey the site originally offered to see whether, in the special circumstances of the case, it could be accepted as suitable. I cannot, therefore, say, at this stage, when the proposed new school will be erected.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether a site for the proposed new school at Muingingane has yet been acquired; and, if so, when the work of the erection of the proposed school will start.

Evidence of title to the site originally offered and accepted as suitable for the proposed new school at Muingingane cannot be established. I understand that there is an alternative site available. New developments have, however, arisen in the case and it will be necessary for the Department to carry out further investigations before a decision can be taken in the matter.
