Vol. 141 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the date on which the County Manager (Tipperary South Riding) took over the private water supply at Clogheen, County Tipperary, and (b) whether authority to do so was given by his Department.

A water supply system was installed in Clogheen by the sanitary authority which was then the rural district council. I understand that this was done by extension of the workhouse supply. The system has since passed by operation of law to the county council.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the County Manager of Tipperary (South Riding) has instituted proceedings against private persons living in condemned houses and shopkeepers in Clogheen, County Tipperary, for failure to pay substantial increases in water rates, and if, in view of the fact that the provision of the water supply in question was guaranteed by 17 rate-payers in Clogheen, as a private concern and that the loan has long since been redeemed he will state (a) whether this demand was made on the authority of the county council; and, if so, (b) the date on which the relevant authority to do so was given by the council.

The fixing of water charges is a matter of local responsibility. I have received no representations in regard to the matters referred to by the Deputy.
