Vol. 142 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensions Payments.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware of the grave discontent among the recipients of old age and widows' and orphans' pensions due to the inadequacy of the amounts payable, having regard to the present cost of living; and, if so, if he will consider introducing proposals for legislation to increase the allowances.

I am not so aware and I do not intend to introduce any proposals in the near future for legislation on the lines indicated in the question.

Is the Minister aware that many local councils have granted supplementary allowances to these people by way of home assistance in recent times? How, then, can the Minister justify his claim that the allowances are adequate?

They have always done that.

Not always. It is an indication that the allowances are inadequate.
