Vol. 142 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Enforcement of Licensing Laws.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that in regard to their visits to licensed premises at night in Cahirciveen for the purpose of enforcing the licensing laws a noticeable distinction is made by the Garda Síochána there inasmuch as some premises are visited frequently, while others are not visited at all; furthermore, if he is aware that grave dissatisfaction exists due to this discrimination; and, if so, whether he will have the matter fully investigated and indicate the reasons for this discrimination and state whether its cessation has been ordered.

I am informed by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána that he has had the matter complained of in the question investigated by the local officer, who states that he is fully satisfied that the Gardaí are performing the duties under the licensing laws fairly and reasonably and that they are not giving unmerited attention to any licensed premises. If the Deputy supplies me with evidence to the contrary I shall have the matter further investigated.

They cannot raid every public-house every night.

Is the Minister aware that some Gardaí in Cahirciveen are politically minded?

The Deputy should not make charges against officers of the police force.

They rarely raid the premises of people of a certain political persuasion.
