Vol. 142 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Creamery.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the public controversy regarding the closing down of the Glenbeigh creamery and whether he will state the reason for the decision to close this creamery and who took this decision.

As regards the first part of the question, I am not aware of any public controversy in this matter at present.

As regards the other parts of the question, I am informed by the Dairy Disposal Company, Limited, that the closing by the company of Glenbeigh cream-separating station in August,1953, was a purely temporary expedient designed to facilitate the experiment which the company was conducting in the neighbouring areas of Cromane and Caragh Lake where the need for the provision of creamery facilities was at that time being tested by means of a lorry service. It was intended to replace the lorry for a short time by a travelling creamery operated by the manager of Glenbeigh cream-separating station, but the company subsequently reopened the Glenbeigh premises and secured another manager for the travelling creamery.

Did the order come from the Dairy Disposal Company to close down that creamery?

Yes, it was entirely the responsibility of the Dairy Disposal Company.
