Vol. 143 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Flooding.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the widespread and severe flooding which is taking place in several catchment areas in County Donegal and the great damage being so done to first-class land, particularly when such land is so scarce and valuable in the county, he will endeavour to have schemes started under the Arterial Drainage Acts in some part of the county in the near future.

In view of the present commitments of the Commissioners of Public Works in the matter of drainage schemes under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, I regret that it will not be possible to undertake in the near future a scheme under thatAct for any of the catchment areas in the County Donegal.

May I ask the Parliamentary Secretary whether he agrees that, due to the relatively small acreage in the catchment areas of Donegal, it is unlikely that under the present arrangements any drainage will take place in these catchment areas within possibly the next 15 or 20 years? Something obviously must be done if there is to be any progress in the county in regard to drainage.
