Vol. 143 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate (a) the places in Inishowen where land for afforestation has been offered to his Department; (b) the places which have been inspected and (c) the results of the inspections.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what progress has been made to date on the proposed afforestation schemes in Inishowen, and whether he has satisfied himself that such progress is adequate; further, if he will ensure that these schemes will be proceeded with immediately.

Mr. Lynch

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to reply to Questions Nos. 71 and 69 together.

Lands for afforestation have been offered in the Inishowen peninsula in the townlands of Glenard, Tonduff, Gortleck, Carnagarve, Ballybrack, Ballynally, Tullyally, Glasalt or Treanfasy, Glassmullan, Churchland Quarters, Glenagivney, Bredagh Glen, Shandrim, Tullydush Upper, Carrow-more or Glentogher, Magheramore, Aghatubbrid, Kindroghed and Leitrim.

All the areas offered have been the subject of preliminary inspection and detailed inspection has been carried out in the areas offered in Glenard, Tonduff and Gortleck.

Negotiations will be opened on those offers which afford the best prospect of acquisition, and progress with the remaining offers must depend on the outcome of these negotiations. There is good ground for hoping that establishment of a forest centre on the peninsula will be possible.

I am satisfied that the progress made in this matter is satisfactory.
