Vol. 143 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parts for American Cars.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is extreme difficulty in obtaining from the United States of America spare parts for American-made cars and if, in view of the inconvenience caused to owners of such cars, he will make a statement on the matter.

Mr. Lynch

Inquiries which I caused to be made did not reveal that any difficulty prevails in obtaining from the United States of America spare parts for American-made cars, nor has any complaint regarding a shortage of spare parts been received previously in my Department.

I might say that I went to the Department last week and made a complaint. I went also to one of the motor-car assemblers who told me that they had an order in the United States for a particular part for a Chevrolet car since last April and that the order had not yet been filled. Would the Parliamentary Secretary consider enlisting the aid of our trade representatives in the United States?

Mr. Lynch

The information suppliedin the answer is a positive denial that there are any such complaints.

Did the Deputy not make one last week?

Mr. Lynch

Other than that complaint, there are none.

At least one hackney man in my home town has been held up in his work for three or four weeks because he cannot get a part for a Chevrolet car.

The Chevrolet is not a United States car, is it?

What is it?

Is it not Canadian?

These are refinements into which I would not be able to go.

The question refers to the United States of America.

Mr. Lynch

The Deputy ought to indicate the name and address of the particular agent in Wexford to the authorities, when I am sure the matter will be investigated.
