Vol. 144 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces — Pensions Increases.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state what increase is being allowed under the Army Pensions Act, 1953, to officers of the Defence Forces who retired from the service between 1947 and 1949.

Under the Army Pensions Acts the disability pension awarded to an officer of the Forces who retired in 1947, 1948 or 1949 was either a certain percentage of his pay at the date of his retirement or a certain fixed sum, whichever was the greater. The precentage of pay and the fixed sum varied with the degree of disablement—60 per cent. of pay or £140, whichever was the greater, being appropriate to the case of a 100 per cent. degree of disablement. Only in a few exceptional cases of junior officers did the fixed sum exceed the appropriate percentage of pay.

An officer who retired in any of the years in question and who had his pension calculated by reference to pay received no increase in pension under the Army Pensions Act, 1953. An officer who had his pension based on the fixed sum received an increase which varied with the degree of disablement and which raised the previous pension of £140 per annum for a 100 per cent. disablement to £170 per annum.

In a case where an additional pension was payable to an officer as a married officer, such additional pension was increased by 25 per cent.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state what increase is being allowed under the Army Pensions Act, 1953, to N.C.O.s and men of the Defence Forces who retired from the service between 1947 and 1949.

The Army Pensions Act, 1953, provided various rates of increases in the disability pensions of discharged non-commissioned officers and men, including those discharged in the years 1947, 1948 and 1949. These increases are tabled in the second and fourth Schedules to the Act. Under these Schedules, the previous maximum pension of £2 10s. per week for a 100 per cent. disablement was increased to £3 1s. 2d. per week.

The Act also increased by 25 per cent. the additional pension payable to a married man.
