Vol. 145 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pensions Act.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether an increase in long-service pensions is being granted under the Army Pensions Act, 1952, to (a) officers and (b) N.C.O.s and privates of the Defence Forces who retired from active service between 1947 and 1949.

I assume the Deputy's question relates to the Defence Forces (Pensions) (Amendment) Scheme, 1953, which was promulgated on the 31st July, 1953, and which governs the grant of retired pay and pensions to Army personnel. That scheme does not provide for increases in the retired pay of officers who retired between 1947 and 2nd September, 1949, or in the pensions of N.C.O.s and men who were discharged between those dates.

The retired pay of officers who retired on or after the 2nd September, 1946, and before the 2nd September, 1949, and the pensions of long-service soldiers who were discharged between those dates, were increased by the Defence Forces (Pensions) (Amendment) Scheme, 1947.

The question of granting any further increases in the retired pay of officers who retired before the 2nd September, 1949, and in the pensions of soldiers who were discharged before that date, is not one which can be dealt with separately. It can only be considered in conjunction with any question of increases for similarly circumstanced State pensioners generally.
