Vol. 145 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the present position with regard to the extension of the rural electrification scheme to the Drimoleague and Reenascreena areas.

I have been informed by the E.S.B. that the Rossmore rural area, which includes Reenascreena, was not successful when considered on a number of occasions for selection for development under the rural electrification scheme, as the returns from the area were not as good as those from other areas awaiting development in the board's Cork No. 2 district. The board suggests that the prospects of development would be improved by an increase in the number of householders in the area willing to take supply.

I have also been informed that the Drimoleague area has not so far been considered for development as no organised approach has been made to the board by the residents. The board's district engineer at Mallow Road, Cork, will be prepared to advise the residents' representatives regarding the organisation of a local canvass which will be a necessary preliminary to an official canvass of the area.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is now in a position to state the number of districts in South Kerry awaiting the installation of rural electrification and the order of priority in which they are likely to be dealt with.

I have been informed by the E.S.B. that, in addition to one area in which work under the rural electrification scheme is in progress, seven other areas in South Kerry have been considered by the board but have not so far been selected for development under the scheme. I have been further informed by the board that it is not possible to state in what order the seven areas will be developed as the position of any area may change due to an increase in the number of residents electing to take supply and the possibility of a change in the cost of development of the area.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is hoped to extend the rural electrification scheme to the Ballymacarbery and Nire areas of County Waterford.

I have been informed by the E.S.B. that the Ballymacarbery area, which includes Nire, has not so far qualified for selection under the rural electrification scheme due to the small number of householders in the area who have undertaken to accept supply. The board is unable to state when development is likely to take place but suggests that the prospects of development could be improved by an increase in the number of residents in the area willing to take supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is hoped to extend the rural electrification scheme to the Rathgormac-Clonea-Crehana area, County Waterford.

I have been informed by the E.S.B. that the Rathgormac area which includes Clonea and Crehana was not successful when considered for selection under the rural electrification scheme due to the fact that the returns from the area were not as good as those from other areas awaiting development in the board's Waterford district. While the area will again be considered from time to time the board is unable to say when development is likely to take place.
