Mr. Maher

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what progress has been made by the Forestry Branch of his Department in connection with the purchase of lands for forestry purposes at Collohill, County Laois.

Mr. Blowick

Agreement has been reached for the purchase of two areas totalling 25½ acres in the townland of Ballykealy and investigation of title is in progress.

The Department expects to be in a position to open negotiations in the near future for five adjoining areas totalling 50 acres.

Where so many small offers are involved progress of acquisition is likely to be slow.

Mr. M.P. Murphy

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the acreage and the location of land which he proposes to acquire for afforestation purposes in West Cork during the present year.

So far during the year, 1954-55, 308½ acres of land have been acquired for forestry purposes in West Cork. Owing to the time-factor involved in negotiating on price and subsequently in clearing title, it is impossible to forecast with any reasonable degree of accuracy what acreage of land will be acquired over any given period. Agreement on price has, however, been reached in 15 cases totalling 3,115 acres and title investigations are in progress. Negotiations on price are proceeding on 31 offers totalling 2,647 acres.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a table indicating the townlands in which lie the areas mentioned above as likely to be acquired.
