Vol. 147 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Married Quarters.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that the married quarters known as Beach Cottages, Spike, Cobh, are in a bad state of repair, and, if so, if he will take steps to have them reconstructed and improved so as to lessen the strain on the local council in the provision of houses; further, if he is aware that there is a number of houses in Haulbowline, which, if properly reconstructed, could serve as married quarters for the naval and army personnel stationed there, and, if so, if he will state what action he intends taking in the matter.

The married quarters known as Beach Cottages, Spike Island, are in a very bad state of repair over many years. They are incapable of being rendered habitable at reasonable expenditure.

There are 40 houses on Haulbowline Island of which 18 are leased to an industrial concern, ten are occupied by civilians and nine by service personnel. Of the remaining three houses repairs are being effected to two with a view to their allocation to service personnel at an early date. The third house is derelict.

The possibility of making further houses on Haulbowline available for service personnel is being examined.
