Vol. 147 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Excessive Home-Work for Children.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that pupils of many national and secondary schools are given excessive home-work, and, if so, if he will issue recommendations for the guidance of teachers in this matter.

I am not aware that, as the Deputy suggests, pupils of many national and secondary schools are given excessive home-work and, in point of fact, apart from some generalised statements, no representations have, for many years, been made to my Department that excessive home-work is given to the pupils of these schools.

The practice of assigning a reasonable amount of home-work is generally approved and I do not consider that the position calls for any present action by my Department. The Council of Education in its recent report has adverted to this matter so far as national schools are concerned. The recommendations in the report on this and other matters are being examined in my Department.
