Vol. 147 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Holdings.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission are aware of the necessity for rearranging the holdings on the Dickens estate, which comprises the greater part of the Corraun peninsula, Achill; further, if, in view of the fact that there is a large number of families residing on uneconomic holdings on this estate, and that the rundale system operates there, he will request the Land Commission to take immediate action in the matter.

The Land Commission have the question of the rearrangement of the Dickens estate holdings on the Curraun peninsula under constant review. They have been endeavouring to secure additional land in the area for the purpose of relieving congestion but they find it extremely difficult to do so. I am informed that there is still a general reluctance to permanent migration to eastern areas and if the Land Commission were to attempt an immediate rearrangement of the holdings it would mean abandoning all hope of effectively enlarging them.

The housing conditions on the estate are good.
