Vol. 147 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - 1951 to 1953 Wheat Statistics.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state, in respect of each of the years 1951 to 1953, inclusive, (a) the total acreage of wheat grown, (b) the total tonnage received at the mills, (c) the stocks held by seedsmen, and (d) the average price per ton paid for green wheat.

The acreage of wheat grown in the year 1951 was 281,637 acres; in 1952 it was 254,421 acres, and in 1953 it was 353,879 acres. In reply to (b), it is considered appropriate to give data for the "crop year", 1st September to 31st August following. The total tonnage of native wheat received at all mills (adjusted for inter-mill sales) in the crop year 1951-52 was 197,149 tons; in the crop year 1952-53 it was 211,617 tons, and in the crop year 1953-54 it was 335,495 tons. The stocks of native wheat held by seedsmen amounted to 22,108 tons on 5th January, 1952; to 34,491 tons on 3rd January, 1953, and to 35,573 tons on 2nd January, 1954. It is estimated that the average price per ton paid for green wheat for milling was £27 in the crop year 1951-52; £30 in the crop year 1951-53, and £32 in the crop year 1953-54.
