Vol. 147 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of County Roads.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will authorise the Limerick County Council to spend funds, which have been allocated for main roads, on the improvement of county roads.

No re-distribution of moneys already allocated is practicable but, as I have recently stated, a review of the basis of future allocations with a greater differential in favour of county roads will be made before next year's grants are notified.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will modify the appropriate regulations in regard to main roads so as to enable local authorities to concentrate moneys on county roads.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply I have just given to the preceeding question.

Would the Minister agree that the statement made by him recently, in which he stated that the local authorities were responsible for building boulevard roads for the automobiles of plutocrats, is to be construed as meaning that local authorities are responsible entirely for concentrating expenditure on main roads in preference to county roads, whereas the fact is that a direct specification accompanies each grant from the Local Government Department as to how these moneys are to be spent——

Is the Deputy asking a question or making a statement?

He is asking is the Minister aware.

I am glad the Deputy is learning his lesson.

Is the Minister further aware that already——

The Deputy is a very good pupil.

——in respect to the maintenance of main roads, grants of 40 per cent. come out of the Road Fund, whereas the expenditure on the maintenance of county roads has to come entirely out of the local rates?

If the Deputy wants a reply to his supplementary I shall be glad to answer it if he will put down a question on that matter.

In view of the unsatisfactory answer which I have received, I propose, a Cheann Comhairle, to raise the subject matter of this question on the Adjournment.

I shall communicate with the Deputy later on the matter.
