Vol. 149 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kildare Forestry Centres.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the considerable amount of unemployment existing in North Kildare at the end of each turf season and the severe hardships suffered by Bord na Móna workers as a consequence, he will consider the establishment of forestry centres in the area to provide employment during the long winter season when no work is available on the bogs.

There is little possibility of setting up additional forests in North Kildare in the near future. Offers of land in this area are very few and if the Deputy knows of any land which may be available and suitable for forestry I shall be glad to hear of it. In any case employment on forestry work is likely to be more or less permanent in character and seasonal increases in staff for planting or nursery work are unlikely to be significant.
