Vol. 149 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Yalta Conference.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to newspaper reports containing summaries of the official records of the Yalta conference between the late President Roosevelt, the late Marshal Stalin and Sir Winston Churchill, which have recently been made public by the American State Department, and in particular to the report that Sir Winston Churchill had assured Marshal Stalin that he would be opposed to the admission of Ireland to membership of the United Nations and that he certainly did not include Éire among the possible candidates for membership of the United Nations; and, if so, if he will state the exact context in which these references to Ireland were made at Yalta and give the relevant extracts from the minutes published, which refer to Ireland.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will obtain and place in the Library of the Houses of the Oireachtas copies of the official records of the Yalta Conference, which have recently been released for publication by the American State Department.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose taking Questions Nos. 18 and 19 together.

While I have seen newspaper reports on the Yalta Conference records, I have not yet seen a copy of the official United States Department of State publication. Consequently I cannot at this stage furnish the information requested by the Deputy in his first question.

I have, however, ordered some copies of the official text of the conference records and will be pleased to forward copies to the Oireachtas Library when they come to hand.
