Vol. 150 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salk Vaccine.

asked the Minister for Health when it is hoped to have for use in this country a supply of the Salk vaccine, which has just been announced in the United States of America as an unqualified success in the fight against infantile paralysis.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has considered the results obtained from the Salk anti-polio vaccine, and whether it is proposed to purchase the vaccine for use in this country.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 56 and 57 together.

I am most anxious that we in this country should take advantage of any development which would be of assistance in the prevention and control of poliomyelitis and with this end in view full copies of the report dealing with the Salk vaccine are being obtained for study in my Department. In addition, the Medical Research Council are being consulted with a view to obtaining an early supply of the Salk vaccine for use here on an experimental basis or otherwise as may be considered appropriate in the light of the latest information available.
