Vol. 153 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Flooding.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has yet received the report of the American consultant engineer who surveyed the Shannon flood area, and, if so, whether he has considered the report and what action it is proposed to take in the matter.

I have received a preliminary report from Mr. Louis E. Rydell, the American consultant engineer. Mr. Rydell has invited comments and suggestions on his report from Departments and other bodies concerned. When these have been received and considered he proposes to submit a report in final form.

I am very glad the Minister mentioned the fact that this engineer has invited reports from interested bodies. Can the Minister give an assurance that representations will be considered and that the comments of the farmers' associations will be taken into consideration by this engineer? Is the Minister aware that the Shannon Valley Protection Association have employed the services of an engineer for many years past? In view of the desirability of ensuring that these people are satisfied that all aspects of the matter are dealt with, will the Minister ensure that this engineer will be allowed to meet the American engineer to discuss every aspect?

If any person or body who is interested in this problem submits representations to me, I will ensure that they are conveyed to Mr. Rydell.
