Vol. 153 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Bridge for Cork.

andJ. Lynch asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects to be in a position to issue a decision in regard to the application of the Cork Corporation for a bridge order for the construction of a new bridge to replace Parnell Bridge.

I hope to be in a position to issue a decision in regard to the application in the near future.

Is the Minister aware that this inquiry was held on the 11th May, 1954, and that on the 8th June last the Minister for Health, replying for the Minister for Local Government, told me the very same thing that the Minister is now telling me? Has the Minister anything further to add now to what I was told last June?

I am fully aware of what the Deputy says. Considerable evidence was tendered in opposition to the making of a bridge order, particularly by those who had berthing rights higher up the river. This is a very controversial matter and I want detailed evidence. I am not satisfied that the making of a bridge order is of sufficient importance to justify the withdrawal of inspectors from other work. However, I will endeavour to give a decision in the very near future. As I say, in view of the very controversial nature of the evidence which has been tendered at the inquiry, it is most difficult to make the decision.

It need not take a couple of months. It could at least move as fast as the cost of living.
