Vol. 154 No. 2

Written Answers. - Primary School Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will furnish a return showing in respect of the years 1939-40, 1948-49, 1950-51, and 1954-55 (a) the average inclusive salary of all teachers serving in primary schools, (b) the average pension of superannuated primary teachers, and (c) the number of primary teachers on pension.

Statistics in relation to teachers' salaries which would enable an average salary for all teachers for a year to be furnished are not available and the considerable expenditure of official time which would be required to compile figures on that basis would not be warranted.

In recent years, however, a census of teachers' salaries has been prepared on a number of occasions from which it is possible to give, for specific dates, the average salary rate of all teachers, trained and untrained, then serving in national schools who were in receipt of personal salaries. The figures in question are:—

ate of Census

Average salary rate (to the nearest £1)

31/3/1950

£391

1/4/1952

£459

1/1/1955

£489

The average salary rate includes scale salary and any increases allowed thereon but does not include any allowances e.g. bonus for special qualifications, principals' allowance.

In the case of superannuation also it is to be noted that statistics which would enable an average pension for a year to be furnished are not available and could not readily be provided.

The following figures show the position on the specific dates mentioned:—
