Vol. 157 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Atomic Energy.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether, in view of his statement that he would welcome the fullest co-operation with the Six Counties in the development of atomic energy in Ireland, he will state whether he has taken any action towards this end, and, if so, the nature of such action.

As was announced on the 21st March last, the Government have established an Atomic Energy Committee, with specific terms of reference, to advise them on matters concerning the peaceful uses of atomic energy. Pending the receipt and consideration of a report from this committee it would be premature to consider any positive steps with a view to co-operation, in this matter, with the authorities of the Six Counties.

The desirability of securing such co-operation will continue to be borne in mind by the Government.

In view of the Minister's statement recently that he would welcome co-operation from the Government of the Six Counties, surely it is not unfair to suggest that this Government should issue a cordial invitation to the Northern Government to cooperate with our Government in getting this atomic reactor for use in both parts of our country? Instead of making an announcement in the paper that he would welcome co-operation, why not make a direct approach to these people?

Since that speech was made, this committee has been set up, and, until the committee furnishes a report, I think it would be premature to do anything.

I presume the Government have it in mind that, when this report is available, they will make——

If the Deputy had listened to the end of my reply he would know.

The Minister said we would have to wait.

I said: "The desirability of securing such co-operation will continue to be borne in mind by the Government".

That means that the Government, as a result of receiving this report, will possibly make a direct approach to the authorities in the Six Counties?

I hope it means what it says.

I hope so, too.
