Vol. 157 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Housing Estates Amenities.

andJ. Lynch asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has now examined the position with regard to the completion of roads and sidewalks and the provision of public lighting in privately built housing estates and parks in the Cork suburban area, and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

As promised the Deputies in my reply to their previous question of 15th December last, I have made inquiries in this matter. Some of the areas concerned are in the city and others in the county. The roads through the estates and parks involved are not in the charge of the road authority concerned. The Local Government Act, 1953, sets out the circumstances in which any road involved may be taken over and furthermore gives absolute discretion as a reserved function of the council concerned to decide whether they will take over the roads. As regards public lighting, the local authorities also have a full discretion.

The matter is not, therefore, one in which action by me is required.
