asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether experiments in relation to the possibility of putting turf-burning locomotives into service have been carried out, and, if so, what stage such experiments have now reached, when they are likely to be completed, and the cost of such experiments to date.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf-Burning Locomotives.
I am informed by C.I.E. that experiments in connection with a locomotive which would be capable of using either turf or oil are still in progress. A prototype locomotive is at present under construction, and it is hoped to make the first test with the locomotive by the end of the present year. It is not possible to say when the experiments will be completed. The cost of the experiments to date is £8,496.
