Vol. 158 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Bogs.

andMr. Beegan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is the intention of Bord na Móna to proceed with the development of the bogs in the townlands of Garryduff, Kilmacshane, Kellysgrove and Kylemore, for any purpose, and, if not, if he will state the reasons for the abandonment of the project contemplated when it was decided to have these bogs surveyed.

While no final decision in regard to the project in contemplation when the bogs were surveyed has yet been taken, it is not the intention of Bord na Móna to proceed with the development of these bogs at this stage.

Is it not a fact that the Minister, in his letter to the Banagher Parish Council in February last, stated that Bord na Móna had decided on the manufacture of milled peat on these bogs? Would the Minister state the reason for the change?

I think I have to say to the Deputy that, so far as Bord na Móna is concerned, it is within their power to change their programme from time to time. They take decisions which may not, in the light of experience or as regards the demand for turf, be regarded as expedient, and they have the power to change these decisions.

In view of the fact that we are importing so much foreign fuel is it not the duty of Bord na Móna to expand its work in producing for the generation of electricity and for heating and lighting?

The board is doing that.

The board is not doing that. Is it not a fact that a direction has been issued to the board to slow down on capital development?

That is a different matter.

Will the Minister state if he has changed his mind since he wrote that letter?

The decision is not mine. The board is free to develop the bog. If it regards it as good business, it can develop the bog.

Is it a fact that there is no demand for this turf?

Did the Minister write the letter before the by-election?

My letter would indicate what the board's proposal was at that particular time. The board is free to change its mind in this matter as it is free to make up its mind.
