Vol. 158 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Income.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of 1947 and 1955 the estimated national income, and the estimated percentage of such income paid in local and central taxation.

The estimated national income in respect of 1947 was £297.1 million. The corresponding figure in respect of 1955 is not yet available, but for the year 1954 the estimate was £448,000,000.

Total taxation (both direct and indirect) by all public authorities in the years 1947-48 and 1954-55 was £69.3 million and £114,000,000 respectively. Expressed as a ratio to national income total taxation amounted to 23.3 per cent. in 1947 and 25.4 per cent. in 1954.

It may be mentioned that to consider fully the relationship of taxation to the various aggregates of income and expenditure used in national income statistics, account should also be taken of subsidies and of transfer payments (e.g. old age pensions, children's allowances, etc.) from public authorities to persons.
