Written Answers. - Meath, Louth and Donegal: Local Government Statistics.

Mr. Tully

asked the Minister for Local Government if, as regards the administrative counties of Meath, Louth and Donegal, respectively, he will state in respect of each of the local financial years 1953-54 to 1955-56 (a) the total amount of wages paid to local authority servants, (b) the cost of insuring servants under the Workmen's Compensation Acts, and (c) the cost of administration, including technical and professional services.

The information requested at (b) and (c) is not available in my Department. As regards (a), separate figures are not available for the wages of servants. For the total of salaries and wages paid to officers and servants, I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to him on the 14th instant, so far as the calendar years 1954 and 1955 are concerned. The figures for 1953 are:—

asked the Minister for Local Government if, as regards the administrative Counties of Meath, Louth and Donegal, respectively, he will state in respect of each of the local financial years 1953-54 to 1955-56 (a) the amount paid for the use of hired transport and hired machinery, respectively, (b) the amount of expenditure incurred in connection with the purchase of road machinery and quarry machinery, (c) the amount paid to contractors for the supply of road materials, and (d) the output of the quarries operated by each authority and the expenditure on wages thereby incurred.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available in the Department.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, as regards the administrative Counties of Meath, Louth and Donegal, respectively, he will state in respect of each of the local financial years 1953-54 to 1955-56, (a) the amount raised by local rates for the repair and maintenance of roads and bridges, (b) the amount of Road Fund grants, (c) the amount of grants in respect of employment schemes, (d) the amount of grants in respect of county roads, (e) the amount of grants under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, (f) the amount of tourist road grants, (g) the amount of other road grants, and (h) the total expenditure on the maintenance of roads and bridges.

Notes on above headings.

(a) These figures are the provisions made by the county councils excluding the 40 per cent. Main Road Upkeep Grant for ordinary road works in the year as notified to the Department in the beginning of each year.

(b) All grants allocated through the Road Fund are given, including those under National Development Fund allocations to Road Fund.

(c) The local contributions to these grants, which are for improvement works, are not included.

(d) These are the annual county road improvement grants from the Road Fund and are included in the figures given at (b).

(f) In 1954-55 and 1955-56 these grants were made through the Road Fund and are therefore included in the appropriate figures at (b) for these years.

(g) The grants involved are those for roads in Fíor-Ghaeltacht areas and for roads serving the E.S.B. turf fired electricity generating stations.

(h) The figures for 1955-56 are preliminary estimates furnished by the county councils.
