Vol. 158 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Central Bank Investments in British Securities.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the rate of interest earned by the Central Bank in each of the years 1954, 1955 and 1956 on money invested in British securities.

The rate of interest earned by the Central Bank varies from time to time according to the proportions and amounts of the several assets held but is reflected generally in the income earned by the bank as set out in its accounts for each year ending 31st March which are presented to the Dáil. The accounts for the years ended 31st March, 1954, and 31st March, 1955, show the dividends and interest on the assets of the Legal Tender Note Fund at £1.55 million and £1.64 million respectively. The assets of that fund amounted to £64.84 million and £67.73 million, respectively, at the beginning and end of the year 1953-54, and £67.73 million and £73.96 million at the beginning and end of 1954-55. The accounts of the Central Bank for the year ended 31st March, 1956, are in course of preparation and will be available in six or eight weeks' time.
