Vol. 159 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prices Advisory Body Recommendations.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what commodities, if any, the Prices Advisory Body have recommended should be increased in price and in respect of which a decision of the Government has not been announced; and, in each case, the dates on which the recommendation of the body was received by him.

Recommendations by the Prices Advisory Body are made to me in confidence.

I am satisfied that the disclosure of information regarding the nature of any recommendation made to me by the body in advance of a decision on the recommendation would not be in the interests of the consuming public generally.

Mr. Lemass

Will the Minister give an indication of how many recommendations are outstanding awaiting decision by the Government?

Possibly two.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (a) whether the Prices Advisory Body have investigated the price of bread and flour, and, if so, when; (b) whether an increase in prices was recommended and, if so, how much; (c) whether the recommendation has been considered by the Government and, if so, whether any decision has been made thereon, and when such decision will be announced.

The Prices Advisory Body held a public inquiry on the 2nd and 5th December, 1955, into an application by the bakery trade for adjustment of bread and flour prices.

As indicated in the statement issued by the Government Information Bureau on 24th February, 1956, the Government, having considered the report of the Prices Advisory Body, accepted the view of the body that a full-scale investigation into the costs in the bakery trade would be necessary before reaching a final conclusion regarding the price of bread. I established a committee, accordingly, and required them to furnish an interim report not later than 31st May, 1956. The interim report was duly furnished and is at present under consideration by the Government. I am not yet in a position to state when a decision in the matter may be announced.
