Vol. 159 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bread Subsidy.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the amount of subsidy which would be required in a full financial year to offset an increase of ½d. per 4-lb. loaf of batch bread.

Subsidy is payable on the production of straight-run flour. It is not possible to state precisely the amount of subsidy which would be required to offset an increase of ½d. per 4-lb. loaf of batch bread, but it is estimated that 1,500,000 sacks of subsidised flour are made into baker's bread, of which batch bread represents somewhat less than half. To subsidise 1,500,000 sacks of flour to the extent of ½d. per 4-lb. loaf would cost approximately £281,000.
