Vol. 160 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conditions at Dún Laoghaire Pier.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what measures are being taken to ensure that there will be no repetition of the hardships and sufferings again caused this year at Dún Laoghaire pier to numerous visitors returning to England after their holidays here.

As soon as I learned of the difficulties that occurred at Dún Laoghaire pier in August of this year, I made the strongest possible representations to the chairman of the London Midland Region Board of British Railways. The chairman came to Dublin subsequently and, in discussion with him, it was arranged that the general manager and a number of experts would come to Dublin for discussions with my Department. These discussions, over which the secretary of my Department presided, took place yesterday and Bord Fáilte Éireann participated.

Certain proposals, designed to eliminate difficulties of the type that had occurred at peak tourist periods in the past, emerged from the discussion, and British Railways have undertaken to examine these proposals as a matter of urgency. In addition, working arrangements have now been established to keep the operation of the service under frequent review. So far as the coming Christmas is concerned, British Railways have agreed to provide for a larger number of sailings than last year.
