Vol. 160 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Journalists in Radio Eireann.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the number of members of the editorial staff of (a) the Irish Times and (b) other newspapers who are permanently employed on Radio Eireann programmes, and the number employed on a semi-permanent basis.

There are no members of the editorial staffs of the Irish Times or of any other newspaper employed on Radio Eireann programmes on a permanent or semi-permanent basis. One member of the Irish Times staff has been Chairman of a once-monthly programme for about two years and acts as Chairman on the occasional “Press Conference” programmes. The editor of a journal has been Chairman of a weekly Radio Eireann programme intermittently over about the same length of time. These two men are engaged from programme to programme and they will be so engaged only for as long as it is decided to continue the particular programmes. Their employment cannot, therefore, be regarded either as permanent or semi-permanent.
