Vol. 160 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Tins.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the unemployment position in Limerick, he will have re-examined the possibility of extending the existing plant of the Condensed Milk Company for the manufacture of tins to enable such manufacture there to supply the requirements of the food processing industry which at present have to be imported.

The possibility of extending their existing plant to enable them to undertake the manufacture of containers to supply the requirements of the food processing industry was examined by the Condensed Milk Company late in 1954; and the company then reached the conclusion that it would not be an economic proposition for them to undertake such manufacture, particularly in view of the heavy capital outlay that would be necessary. I understand that the possibilities of economic production are even less favourable now than they were in 1954.
