Vol. 160 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Wheat.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is now in a position to announce the price to be paid in the coming year for Irish wheat.

As I indicated in reply to a similar question from the Deputy last week, I hope to be able to announce very shortly the guaranteed price for millable wheat of the 1957 crop. Discussions with representatives of the growers have not yet been completed.

Is the Minister not aware that it is now pretty late to be telling the farmers the price? When farmers want to grow grain they have got to plough. Further, will the Minister make any attempt to remove the penal tariff of £5 a ton which he imposed?

I will certainly let them know and, in the meantime, I feel sure of the Deputy's cordial co-operation in encouraging the farmers to till as much of their land as possible.

Certainly. Does the Minister know that I was appointed his agricultural adviser? What is the good of my being adviser to the Minister when he will not take my advice?

May I say with emotion: "Oh, the things I do for Ireland."
