Vol. 160 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Re-investigation of Pensions Applications.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state (a) the number of petitions received for re-investigation of applications for pensions under the Military Pensions Act, 1934, (b) the number of petitions re-investigated to date, and (c) the results of the reinvestigations.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the number of petitions which were submitted under the terms of the Military Service Pensions (Amendment) Act, 1949, for the re-investigation of applications which had been rejected under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934.

The number of such petitions was 14,192. In 8,261 cases the Referee was not of the opinion that there was a prima facie case that the applicants were persons to whom the Act of 1934 applied and, accordingly, he had to refuse to re-investigate the applications. The position in regard to the remaining 5,931 cases as at the 30th November, 1956, was as follows:—

Number of favourable reports, 1,501; number of unfavourable reports, 3,375; number still under consideration, 1,055.
