Vol. 160 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Housing Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he will forthwith give sanction in respect of the several applications for loans in respect of county council housing schemes, county council specific instance houses and county council supplementary grants which were submitted to his Department by the Donegal County Council during the past 12 months.

I would refer the Deputy to the statement on the financing of housing operations of local authorities which I made in the House on the 6th instant.

Is the Minister aware that at the moment in his Department there are plans for the building of houses in groups and singly and that the tenders, as far as we are concerned, are correct in every way? Schemes to the value of between £110,000 and £120,000 have been lying in the Department since last January. We want to know what is being done about local authority housing, specific instance housing and county council and supplementary grants housing? Can he tell us when sanction will be received for these schemes?

The only thing I can tell the Deputy is that I am most anxious that a careful survey would be made before we commence building houses in any part of the country. The Donegal County Council built houses in my own home town of Dungloe recently and they let these houses to tenants who had already built their houses because they were tired waiting. We want to ensure that there are tenants available who are anxious to procure local authority houses before the local authorities commit themselves to the building of houses.

That is all cod and the Minister knows it. Nobody knows it better than he does. In view of the Minister's unsatisfactory reply, I should like, a Cheann Comhairle, with your permission, to raise the matter on the Adjournment.

That is a blunder, a gaffe. On a point of order, is not the Adjournment on already?

That is not a point of order.

Sit down.

On a point of order. Is not the Adjournment on already?

That is not a point of order. That is an abstract question which has no relation whatever to the proceedings.
